INCORRECTLY IDENTIFIED CATON PICTURE
The caption reads: NEVADA PIONEERS—This is an early day photo of Mr. and Mrs. Noah Caton in whose home the first Vernon County Court convened on July 9, 1855. The Caton home was located north of Nevada. They were the grandparents of Mrs. Minnie Caton-Bosley of Nevada. [Centennial Issue of The Nevada Herald, Nevada, Missouri; Sunday 1 July 1955]
There are no known photographs of Noah Caton and his wife Frances "Fannie" McDermid. The above picture was incorrectly identified as Noah and Fannie Caton when it was published in the Nevada [Missouri] Herald newspaper Centennial Edition on July 3, 1955. Area residents had been invited to provide pictures of their ancestors for publication in the Centennial Edition of the local newspaper.
Mrs. Minnie Caton-Bosley was the great-granddaughter of Noah Caton (not granddaughter). Her grandparents were William S. Caton 1822-1882 and Nancy Skaggs. Nancy Skaggs Caton died 11 Feb 1847, and William S. Caton's second spouse was Malissa Jane Blevans. This picture may be of Mrs. Caton-Bosley's grandfather William S. Caton and his second wife.
Some of the earliest pictures in this region of the U.S. were during the Civil War. Noah Caton died in 1862 as an old man aged more than 70 years, and the above picture appears to be of a man much younger -- and simply too young to be the elderly Noah and Fannie Caton who were born in the late 1700s.
Please share pictures of any of Noah Caton's children you have to help identify this couple. Christopher Pittman Caton (FindAGrave) Hugh McDermid Caton (this website) Elizabeth A. (Caton) Woolsey Susanna Wright (Caton) Myers (this website) Frances R. (Caton) Jones Fuller (FindAGrave) Noah T. Caton Emily Caroline (Caton) Wray Teel (this website) Hester Ann (Caton) Moore (FindAGrave) Thomas Caton
