Vernon County Cemetery Directory 2007 news story

An ALL-NEW cemetery directory is being created and will be published in early 2024! It will include full names and dates from obituaries and death certificates plus names of parents and spouses for many of the more than 72,000 recorded deaths/burials in Vernon Co. Additionally, a brief source citation for burials will be included.

Academy Cemetery - see Montevallo Cemetery

Amos Cemetery - Henry Township

Description: Inactive; Unmaintained; Earliest known recorded burial is 1857. Only a couple of stones were located in 2006. The small community of Amos was located on the Kansas City Southern Railroad. The Amos post office was in operation from approx. 1893-1931. Nothing remains of the town except a few scattered homes and the old school building.

Legal: Section 8, Township 37N, Range 33W.

Coordinates: 38.014960,  -94.581122

Directions: From Stotesbury, 3 1/2 miles north on Hwy. V, 1/2 mile west on Caton Road.  Burial area is on private property in the woods on the south side of the road.

Antioch Cemetery - Washington Township

Description: Active; Maintained; Earliest known recorded burial is 1871. Land given by Thomas Fry and Samuel Bush.

Legal: Section 16, Township 36N, Range 31W.

Coordinates: 37.901703,  -94.348322

Directions: North of Nevada, exit U.S. 71 west at the junction with Hwy. M, south on 1558 Road about 1/2 mile, west on Jayhawker Road about 1/2 mile. Cemetery in on the north side of the road next to the Antioch Christian Church.

Layout: Listing begins in the southwest corner and rows snake.

Arbor Grove Cemetery - Montevallo Township

Description: Inactive; Unmaintained; Earliest known recorded burial is 1886 and last is 1944. At one time the Arbor Grove Church sat at the north side of the cemetery.

Legal: Section 6, Township 34N, Range 29W.

Coordinates: 37.730759,  -94.160686

Directions: At the junction of 2625 and Ulysses Roads, proceed north on 2625 Road just a few yards and the cemetery lane is on the east side of the road.

Arnold Cemetery - see Bethany Cemetery

Avola Cemetery - Drywood Township

Description: Active; Maintained; Earliest known recorded burial is 1872. The Avola community was settled in 1859-60 and had a post office from about 1869-1885. Nothing remains of the town except a few scattered homes and the cemetery.

Legal: Section 20, Township 34N, Range 31W.

Coordinates: 37.682029,  -94.357141

Directions: From Sheldon, MO, 4 1/4 miles west on Hwy N; 1/4 mile east on Wooden Road. Cemetery is about 100 yards north in the pasture.

Layout: The listing of burials begins in the southwest corner and is listed by row, from south to north. Each row is designated a Section.

Baker Cemetery - Drywood Township

Description: Seldom used; Semi-maintained; Earliest recorded burial is 1853.

Legal: SESE Section 31, Township 34N, Range 31W.

Coordinates: 37.6497661,  -94.3693948

Directions: From the U.S. 71 exit at Sheldon, MO, west on Hwy N a few yards and south 1 mile on 1825 Road (outer road), 3 1/8 miles west on Zodiac, 1/8 mile north on a lane to the cemetery.

(This cemetery was incorrectly previously listed as Oak Grove Cemetery.)

Ball Cemetery (aka Robinson Cemetery) - Virgil Township

Description: Inactive; Unmaintained; Earliest known recorded burial is 1862.

Legal: SW Section 10, Township 35, Range 29.

Directions: From U.S. 54 at Dederick, MO, 2 1/2 miles south on 2750 Road, 3/4 mile east on Overland Road. A lane leads south to the cemetery on private land.

Balltown Cemetery (properly Little Osage Cemetery)

- Osage Township

Description: Active; Maintained; Little Osage Cemetery (now commonly known as Balltown Cemetery) is the oldest cemetery in Vernon County. Earliest recorded burial is that of Nathaniel B. Dodge, Jr., March 23, 1838, who died of wounds from a skirmish with Indians. The town of Little Osage was the location of the first post office in Vernon Co.  The Balltown mill and covered bridge were burned by Union troops during the Civil War, and Balltown was then occupied by Union forces. Nothing remains of the town except the cemetery.

Directions: From Nevada, 8 miles north on U.S. 71 to the Horton exit; 1 mile west on Earp Road. Cemetery is on the north side of the road.

Layout: Listing in each sections begins at the "x," and rows snake. Section 2 has the first 2 rows combined.

Bankson Cemetery - Montevallo Township

Description: Inactive; Unmaintained; Family graveyard; earliest known recorded burial is 1868.

Legal: Section 4, Township 34N, Range 30W.

Coordinates: 37.45.194,  094.06.507

Directions: From Montevallo, 2 miles north on Road 2900; on private property in timber.

Barton County, MO Cemeteries

Beckmon Cemetery - Harrison Township

Description: Inactive; Unmaintained; Earliest known recorded burial is 1877, last is 1934.

Legal: Section 1, Township 34N, Range 33W.

Coordinates: 37.764683,  -94.450947

Directions: From Moundville, MO, 3 1/2 miles west on Hwy F. Cemetery is located 3/4 miles south in a pasture on private land.

Belvoir Cemetery - Blue Mound Township

Description: Inactive; Unmaintained; From 1979 Cemetery Directory: “Belvoir was a fairly thriving settlement from 1839 until the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad (Katy RR) was built through Schell City in 1871. The gravestones from the Belvoir Cemetery were gathered up by and are in the possession of Emmett Applegate, to prevent further loss or damage. He said other stones had been thrown in a ditch north of the cemetery but at last investigation he could not find any others.” Reported by Jim Daily.

Legal: SE Section 25, Township 38N, Range 30W.

Directions: From Schell City, 2 1/4 miles west on Hwy C, 1 1/4 mile north on 2500 Road, 1/4 mile west on Allen Road, north on 2475 Road.

Berea Cemetery - Blue Mound Township

Description: Active; Maintained; Established 1882 on land given by Michael and Ellen Ketterman. Some graves were moved here from the old community cemetery 1/2 mile west and 1 1/2 mile north of the old Ketterman store; thus some dates are before 1882. Additional information previously furnished by Vernon and Mary Balk. Earliest recorded burial is 1879.

Legal: NW Section 30, Township 37N, Range 30W.

Directions: From U.S. 71 north of Nevada, 6 miles east on Hwy M. The cemetery in on the north side of the road at the Berea Christian Church.

Bethany Cemetery (aka Arnold Cemetery) - Blue Mound Township

Description: Inactive; Unmaintained; Earliest recorded burial is 1885 and the last is 1948. David Arnold settled here in 1866.

Legal: NENE Section 33, Township 37N, Range 30W.

Directions: From Walker, 3 miles due north in a field on private property.

Bicket Cemetery (aka Longacre Cemetery) - Drywood Township

Description: Seldom used; Maintained; Earliest recorded burial is 1874.

Legal: NWNW Section 9, Township 34, Range 31W.

Coordinates: 37.720169, -94.344299

Directions: From U.S. 71 2 mile south of Milo, MO, 2 miles west on Hwy. BB. Cemetery is on the south side of the road at the junction of Hwy. BB (Veteran Rd.) and 1625 Road.

Brandt Cemetery - Walker Township

Description: Inactive; Unmaintained; Earliest recorded burial is 1858 and last is before 1910.

Legal: SE Section 36, Township 36N, Range 30W.

Directions: From Nevada, MO, 8 miles east on U.S. 54, 1/2 mile south on 2500 Road, 3/4 mile southwest on private property.

Butler Cemetery - Badger Township

Description: Inactive; Unmaintained; Earliest recorded burial is 1872 and last is 1894.

Legal: SESW Section 1, Township 35N, Range 30W.

Coordinates: 37.834251,  -94.194202

Directions: From Nevada, MO, east on U.S. 54, south on 2400 Rd., east on Old Town Rd. about 250 yards. Cemetery is in the tree line about 200 yards north on private property.
